Coronavirus Diaries: 3/19/20 Cities on Lockdown

San Francisco, like many other cities, is on lockdown.  From the article "Everything is Out of Control", "San Francisco is two days into a lockdown that has no definite end. The city and its surrounding counties imposed shelter-in-place restrictions Tuesday just after midnight, forcing millions of people to stay home and stay put except for essential needs such as shopping for groceries, getting medications, caring for others and exercising."

Baltimore, Md's mayor has asked the citizen's of his city not to shoot each other so they can save the hospital beds for people who have coronavirus.

“I want to reiterate how completely unacceptable the level of violence is that we have seen recently,” Mayor Jack Young said at a press conference on Wednesday, adding, “For those of you who want to continue to shoot and kill people of this city, we’re not going to tolerate it. We’re going to come after you and we’re going to get you.”

In New York, cases of coronavirus have jumped up to 4,000.  This has been driven by increased testing since more kits are now available. “Why are you seeing the numbers go up?” Gov. Andrew Cuomo asked at a news conference Thursday morning. “Because you are taking more tests.”

Modeling has shown that more than 60,000 homeless people could become ill with the coronavirus in California over the next eight weeks, badly straining the healthcare system, the state governor Gavin Newsome said on Wednesday.

"Over the next eight-week period, we have modeled that of the 108,000 unsheltered Californians that are out on the streets, if you had an attack rate of about 56%, you're looking at 60-plus thousand individuals that may have COVID-19," Newsom, a Democrat, said in a Facebook address to the state.

"That creates a deep point of anxiety for the existing population but moreover for our healthcare delivery system, our capacity to move people in and out of the shelters safely without contacting other people and putting them at risk as well."

Even Las Vegas has gone dark and empty.
